SMS Can Help Children Learn to Spell

HanTer - Research in the UK shows send a mobile text message or SMS to help children learn spelling words and proper grammar. More than 160 children, aged between 8 and 16 years old, from West Midlands, took part in this brief study.

The researchers compared the spelling and grammar in formal tests and a brief message, at the beginning of the project and again after one year. The results showed the most creative text makers have excellent spelling ability. Children are asked to copy all their text messages for two days.

They were also asked to perform a variety of spelling, grammar and cognitive tests.
This process was repeated after 12 months. The researchers analyzed the number of "offense" type of grammar and spelling in the text and compare it with the results of the written test children.

They found that in a sample of primary school-aged children, grammatical form of the word usage and conventional spelling in the text associated with better spelling abilities after 12 months later. For secondary students, the reduction of the number of words when texting, is also associated with better spelling.
